RBS: Historical Theology
  • An introduction to the historical background and content of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. Includes a survey of the history of creeds and confessions of the Christian church.
  • A survey of church history from the post-apostolic period to Augustine. Special emphasis given to the church’s growth, the New Testament canon’s development, and the Trinitarian controversies.
  • A survey of church history from Augustine to the Reformation with a focus upon the Pelagian controversy and the rise of the sacramental system, sacerdotal clergy, and Roman papacy.
  • This course on the theology of the Continental Reformation will begin with a survey of the political, social, ecclesiastical and intellectual developments of the late middle ages that prepared the way for the theological and ecclesiastical changes of the Reformation of the 16th century. Special emphasis will be given to the lives and theology of Luther, Zwingli and Calvin. Attention will be given to such doctrines as the knowledge of God, the authority of >Scripture, man as a sinner, predestination, justification, the atonement, the law and the gospel, the church, and the sacraments. Efforts will be made to capture the brilliance and power of the writing and preaching of these great men of God who were so mightily used to turn the world upside down.
  • A survey of church history from the Puritan era to the present with special emphasis >given to Puritan developments, the great missionary movements, the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy, and the recent rise of Reformed Baptist churches in America.
